Celebrate our island home with an exciting day of festivities at the 8th Annual Coral Reef Awareness & Earth Day Fair. The Earth Day Fair will be held at the Outrigger Keauhou Beach Resort alongside Kahalu’u Beach Park, site of the Coral Reef Awareness Day. This fun and educational community event will take place on Saturday, April 19, 2008 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.
Many booths and exhibits will be featured by environmental organizations and agencies that showcase Hawaii Island's fragile ecosystems. A short trip around the Big Island through the activities and displays will showcase why conservationists consider Hawaii to be at the forefront of the global extinction crisis and help to educate the public about some of the rarest plants and animals on earth.
The event will open with a blessing followed by activities and displays for families including Hawaiian crafts, lei making, weaving, poi pounding, seed plantings and petroglyph rubbings. Information on native plants, soil and water conservation, public trails and National Park Week will be shown throughout the Fair. There will be school science displays and the ReefTheater to showcase underwater films and slide shows. Families will meet "Humu" the walking, talking fish, learn from ReefTeach, Fish for Knowledge about the Sea, participate in a coloring contest, a tide pool adventure, whale and dolphin games and crafts.
Come and learn about native plants and birds, corals, whales, turtles, monk seals and more. Learn how you can support Hawaii Island's fragile ecosystems and species through resource and habitat management, education and conservation practices.
