Keiki Surf for the Earth and Beach Cleanup brings together children and adults at Kohanaiki for a day of surfing competition and beautification of the beach. Na Keiki He'e Nalu O Hawai'i, co-sponsors of Keiki Surf, formed to perpetuate the practice of the surfing culture and to provide a positive environment to nurture healthy and safe family building activities.
With the guidance of young adults, keiki (children) help each other to organize and conduct an annual surf contest for their peers aged 6 to 12 years-old. Parents assist their keiki surfers with safety and logistical support. During the day-long event, children paint colorful wise use reminder signs, such as "Malama 'Aina (Take care of the land), engage in litter collection competitions, and plant coconut trees.
